Terminologies

In this paper, I will use both “character” and “personality,” because the two terms seem to hold different weights. Character is something that is more innate and general while personality is a specific trait in a person. Someone could have a good character but a bad personality, and personality seems to be more malleable and disposed to change than character. Although the two are different, they are mostly used together as a pair in the paper rather than to distinguish between the two in terms of a researcher. The term “personae” or “persona” is used to refer to a self-created image or a public image, not just specific personality or character traits, that identifies a scholar. The terms “research,” “researcher,” and “scholar” are used in the broadest sense of the words. Although authors and artists are not usually thought of as researchers or scholars, I will refer to them as so. “Researcher” and “scholar” are used interchangeably, at least in this paper. Furthermore, any production of work, even if it is not a lab paper or a journal article, will be referred to as a research act. For example, a con man is referred to as a researcher and his hoax or fraud will be considered a “research” work.
